Astro log: September 29th, 2010

Catching up on Astro Logs again...

Equipment: Orion Skyview 6 Deluxe EQ, 32mm, 15mm, 9mm, 6mm eyepieces, OIII filter.

New objects observed: Messier 101, NGC 6992 + NGC 6995 + NGC 6960 (East & West Veil Nebula), Stock 2, Messier 76

Previous objects observed: Messier 31, Messier 32, Messier 110, Messier 33, NGC 884 & NGC 869 (Double Cluster)

New location! A spot in the middle of nowhere near Mt. St. Helens.

Notes: This is a spot along Forest Road 25 in Gifford Pinchot National Forest, not far from Mt. St. Helens, that I had discovered and scoped out with Google Maps and Google Earth. Amazingly, for some reason the Google Street View people went down Forest Road 25. I have no idea why. The drive to this location is not bad at all, definitely not terrifying like the drive to Sunrise. Goes through some remote areas, but there's cell service on the way there and back at Morton, along with gas and a grocery store.

Got M101 and M76 out there, nice to knock some toughies off. Stock 2 is just some open cluster I happened to look at after looking at something else (Double Cluster, probably). Veil Nebula looked very nice, especially with the OIII filter. Seems to be very sensitive to light pollution though; can't get it at all at home, even with the OIII. Also pulled in M31, M32, M110, M33, and the Double Cluster.
